Responsive design, application or mobile site to choose?

Positive and negative points

08/09/2017

For that reason, Google has already decided here for some years, to favor Web sites considered as "Mobile Friendly". A label was even created, which we find in search results to indicate whether yes or no, the browsing on a site is adapted to all the screens. To completion, this label should impact on the referencing.

Having a Web site adapted to the mobile browsing thus becomes, essential.

Nevertheless, there are several solutions, with many advantages and inconveniences: the mobile sites, the applications or the design responsive. Before casting the head down in the creation of any project, investigate at first the various possibilities.

Responsive design, the king of formats

Design Responsive is translated by a method of coding allowing to resize the display of a Web site automatically according to the screen’s size of the used terminal. This technique is now used almost systematically during the creation of a web site.

Design Responsive contains numerous advantages. On the one hand, the creation of a single adaptable site in all the support allows to save money, and time because it does not need to work the referencing (référencement)  and update the contents of several sites. With the responsive, the site is also compatible with all the main sailors.

On the other hand, it is impossible to adapt the contents to all the support and time of loading can be longer because the browser has to load many elements in the style sheet that will not use necessarily.

The mobile site, a bet on the ergonomics

Unlike the responsive, the mobile site defines itself by the creation of a second Web site adapted to the mobile. Then why to make life complicated to have an other one when we know the potential of the design responsive? Because the customization is almost unlimited. Sometimes, some activities require to propose a different contents on mobile. For example, a restaurant assuring home deliveries, can put forward a function of on-line order instead of putting in the first one the classic display of the establishment, its history …

A mobile site also allows to improve the ergonomics and the user experience. We can eliminate, for example, a pull-down menu when touching the mouse (with difficulty in practicing with fingers).

As any solution contains advantages and inconveniences, this one does not escape the rule. To create two versions, it would like to say twice more contents to avoid the duplication if you do not use the same basis of datum, thus twice more time. And if it is the case, it will ask you for advanced technical skills.

The application, a question of interaction

Developed specially for smartphones, the applications are Les Papesses interaction. Being accessible via a button on the homepage, they allow not only to send notifications to the mobile Internet user, but also facilitate the purchase and interactions.

The application is a complement to the web site, useless thus to reproduce the present contents. Best being to create an application to answer a precise function: facilitate the purchase (in most of the cases), create a community or a network, favor the exchanges between the customers or with the company, propose a playful contents … You will have understood it, the key word is interaction.

Obviously, there is one "but". As the high-tech world is magnificently designed, a version must be developed for each operating system: an IOS application, an Android, one Windows Phone … This contains obviously, certain cost.

Here we face thus three possibilities, all quite interesting  as the other. But then how to choose? The index is in your activity and the objectives of your presence on Web.

The responsive will suit in showcase sites, blogs or Web magazines, all which does not require to adapt the contents.

The mobile site will suit for more or less all the functions whereas the application will be favored to develop loyalty of the Internet user and facilitate the action.

Pending on a decision, you can always see if your Web pages are compatible with the navigation on motive thanks to Google’s tool of test (l’outil de test) "Mobile-Friendly".
