Zinc, Arts and Digital Cultures

Zinc, installed in Friche Belle de Mai for 17 years, in Marseille, is a center of creation "arts and digital cultures". In this place, it is possible to practice, learn about the digital arts, improve and discover the multimedia. It is the producer who accompanies artists, programs their works and encourages the forms of arts stemming from digital technologies.

A definition of the digital art?

Digital art includes all the realizations designed from digital tools (computers, networks …). If it is difficult to define, we can connect Marcel Duchamp, as a founder of the net.art, with Urinoir Renversé, 1917. With this work, he thinks the same line according to which the net.art is represented by all arte fact defined as a creator’s work. The approach is what it imports, but not the object itself. This current also allows to have a deeper vision of technologies which surround us every day. Initially, it made reference only to music and visual arts. The digital technology has been introduced later in all the forms of traditional art such as video, cinema, television or even literature, which allowed to present all the arts in different shapes.

Renowned artists in the digital art?

In terms of French digital art, we can refer Pierrick Sorin, a visual and French video artist. Especially, he is well-known for his works: Les réveils (alarm clocks) in 1988, Vacances (Holidays) in 1991, and C'était bien du coulis de tomate (It was good with tomato coulis) in 2005. His latest realization dated 2014 when he presented his exhibition "I return" in Paris.

An another example, Georg Nees, a German artist born at the beginning of the XXth century, also is a reference in this domain. In fact, he is known as a pioneer of the digital art in his early stages. His work Schotter in 1968 implemented with a computer is an innovative graph for his time.

This exhibition also is the opportunity to discover a piece of the little known and particularly rich art. A family outing which can be only the awareness of the cultural movements.
