Jean-Christophe Duvivier, a R*D manager

A Web research and development manager at Jalis, Jean - Christophe Duvivier's portrait

03/12/2014

JC, as we name him at Jalis, is the manager of the developers’ team of our agence web. As he is also a Web R*D director, he has one more post of a Web project manager. JC attempts to improve customers’ user-friendliness as well as teams.

How long have you worked at Jalis and what is your function in the Web company?

I joined Jalis in August, 2008, first of all, as an alternation student, then I have had a full-time job since July, 2011. I began to work at Jalis as a Web developer, then I have gained a short experience as a web designer before becoming a Web project and development service manager. Based on this promotion, next year I will become a CEO.

Before joining Jalis, what was your job?

After achieving my high school diploma in sciences, I entered a DUT GEII in Toulon where I have quickly abandoned the benefit of a DUT SRC (Services and Networks of Communication) in Saint Raphaël. There I have shaped my technical luggage.

I deeply recommend this multidisciplinary training which has a significant impact on all the Web jobs (programming, computer graphics, marketing, video, etc.) and offers the practice of which many trainings are combined with theory. If you come from the South, there is a little special offer for the IUT of Saint Raphaël (serecom.univ-tln.fr ), professors are excellent, well-equipped facilities and very accessible housing.

Then I moved to an engineering school in Marseille (4IM) to enrich my technical luggage bringing me of profound knowledge in Web project steering.

Could you describe your current post in a few words?

My post is rather complete. In spite of project manager's title, the technique is well represented what I develop in R&D projects and assure the maintenance of numerous customer projects. At the same time, I pilot several in-house projects and manage a 5-people team. Although it is fascinating, it is not obvious to manage all these aspects which are convergent, and still quite different.

What do you prefer in your work?

My freedom. Finally, I like many things, but everything comes down in my action freedom. Despite certain constraints preexisting in all the companies, I estimate to be free of my movements concerning the prioritization of the projects, the used technologies. I like affecting projects of different natures, tasks of different natures, designing some thing from A to Z, following its development, helping it improve.

Which project are you most satisfied with?

It is JalisTouch, a CMS developed internally to satisfy the needs for our customers. This product has been available since October, 2011 and counted more than 500 installations. Today, Jalis Touch has more than one installation per day.

Which project gave you the hardest time and why?

That appears to be logical, the answer is the same, it is about Jalis Touch. The project lasted several months, we left nothing and the needs were rather fuzzy. We spent a lot of time on the documentation and it was difficult to reconcile needs for customers with certain technical requirements.

Do you have some advice to give to those who begin in the Web sector?

To develop, it is necessary to be interested in everything. To be excellent, it is necessary to specialize. I thus advise to adopt a subtle mixture of these two things. The best one is to manage 3 circles:

- The first one is vast, it includes all the subjects which touch Web closely or remotely (the weekly eve)

- The second circle is more restricted, it is the domains which you know very technically (the eve and the weekly practice)

- The last circle is a point, it is your specialization, you are a referent (the eve and the daily practice)

At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention on human beings! The human being is you and the others!

Web is new! It is the teamwork! It is the sharing! It is serious, without taking seriously! Exchange, discuss, do not cloister yourselves. Multiply projects to several ones, improve all the experience which stretches out your arms!

Make the eve on JDG, Clubic, take a good dose of inspiration on thefwa, abduzeedo, 500px, mess a little of 9gag and spi0n and you will be in the good way.

Long life and prosperity

It is thus the note that JC ends its portrait.
