Nostalgeek - Find your child's soul with the retrogaming

Play numerous mythical games with a little do-it-yourself!

08/11/2016

E retrogaming is the fact of interest and playing former games. This activity became a trend, in particular with the release of Sega Megadrive and Nintendo Classic Mini which is a version modernized of NES mythical (in November, 2016). While a part of gamers looks for games with quality graphics but asking for the muscular configuration, more and more enthusiasts prefer to return to childhood with mythical games such as Great Mario World (SNES - Great Nintendo), Space Invaders (on border of arch) and Sonic tea Hedgehog (Sega Megadrive).

To play it, there are numerous emulators but if you want to make your own border of arch, it is possible!

1- I have an old computer and I want to give him a second life. Is it possible?

With an old machine (even not too much), you can make a post of dedicated game! With a screen (your television screen or an old instructor) and a lever (generic lever USB or adapters can be found on the Internet for some euros), you can dive back into the video game classics- which occupy you during the holidays or rainy weekend!).

Then, for the configuration: if your computer starts, download directly the software (example: RetroArch, DosBox, PPSSPP, etc.) and the games - if you have a copy at home. If you leave anything, you can install Lakka distribution (distribution Lakka) (or copy the distribution to an USB of 2 Go and start above). The process of installation seem to be difficult with numerous helps available on-line.

2 - I prefer a portable solution and which does not consume a lot. Is it possible?

Since 2012, the fondation Raspberry Pi took out a miniature computer: Raspberry Pi. In addition to its affordable price (from 5€ for Raspberry Pi Zero to 35 € for the latest model, Raspberry Pi 3), you can use this machine as a real computer.

Main characteristics: it is fed by microphone USB (yes, as most of telephones and tablets), it is rather powerful (thanks to its processor quad-core for Raspberry Pi 3) and the internal memory is made by microphone SD. Thanks to HDMI port (or HDMI mini for the model Zero), you can connect a screen either buy a mini screen as a display for Game Boy games.

If you want a portable solution (and what you are experienced in electronics), you can opt for this retrogaming mounting (montage rétrogaming) (in English). It is about an emulator with the Game Boy case. With Gameboy finally and diverse electronic components (buttons, billposters), you can give back a second breath.

The advantage of Raspberry Pi is that it is endowed with programmable ports (GPIO) which allow you to add buttons: the ideal to add a joystick or buttons of games! Thanks to the USB ports, the connection of levers remains possible and for the most nostalgic, there are even retro levers which connect in USB, on the Internet.

By installing Lakka, Retrobox or RecalBox, it is possible to use it to have fun with numerous video games. Every emulator has its advantages and is easy to use. You can connect its levers (recent or not) above: most will be natively recognized.

3- I want a border of arch at home! How I can make?

IF you have boards, buttons and one or two joysticks, you can personalize your system of games to give a more attractive air, and for some dozen of euros (and the nice afternoon do-it-yourself). The advantage of Raspberry Pi is to have a completely customizable low-priced computer and a big community which can help you.

There are numerous tutorials and plans. For example, blog de Romain Da SilvaRaspbian France and la communauté Open Consoles  community give you explanations step by step to concretize this project.

To conclude, the retro-gaming, it's perfect for those who want to (re)discover the games in advance which did not make the race towards the optimization of the user experience and for those who are against on-line games (sisi, which exists). With more or less manipulations, you can have even a border made by yourself and it is Made in France!

Have fun!
